Turkey Creek Trail (Emma Long Metropolitan Park. Austin)

July 3rd, 2004

On a beautiful summer day we decided had to drive for bathing at the Town Lake. Not far away from us, it is about 20 minutes to drive, there is the Emma Long park. It is at the 'Colorado River', which flows in the Lake Austin, also known as Townlake. We enjoyed the afternoon, without going bathing however, since the water, probably by the many rainfalls, was cooled down to much. We saw a sign to the 'Turkey Creek Trail ' when we left the park. I searched the Internet and found some information (like these).  On July 3rd, we decided to hike on that trail. We didn't expect to be required to walk trough the water and to cross the river several times.

The first half of the way follows the river course and crosses the river several times. Afterwards it goes then over a dome-shaped mountain top and slowly again back to river. The Trail is about 2,5 miles long. It took us approximately 1,5 hours and we where able to enjoy the nearly unaffected nature. During the entire time we did not see too many wanderer. Unfortunately it is permitted on this Trail to let dogs run around freely. That is disturbing and is surely also the reason that we haven't seen any other animal beside the fishes in the crystal-clear water, some beautiful large butterflies and the red-pinnated birds. No other animals, like deers were to be observed.

Nevertheless the way was worthwhile itself and we will surely visit the park again... this Trail is by the way free of charge
