County Fair & Rodeo in Austin (27.Maerz 2004)

While our stay in Texas we wanted to visit at least once a Rodeo. We had the opportunity on March 27, 2004. We bought tickets to the ' County fair ' in Austin. It was the last day of that convention. Preliminary decisions have been made during the previous days to identify the best rodeo riders of the season . Today was the final and it should turn out who to the best ones belongs.

The Rodeo is however not everything that was pointed to the County fair. There were also demonstrations and honors of the best bulls. Here are a few short videos of animals, which were shown there. Some of those have been for sale:

Longhorn

Of course... the symbol animal of Texas could not be missing: The
Longhorn (click on the picture and the animal grows on 800x600)

Sodele... as we ' Americans of time' say! Who had now thought the County Fair offers nothing else but 'cow trade' and Rodeo was mistaken! Additionally there was a kind fair with various roundabouts (the ferris wheel)  and of course also ' fast food stands'.

But now finally to the Rodeo! I must say in front that filming was not permitted and we sat too far away, to make good photos... unfortunate actually! Here are some pictures I made... click
on them and they appear to a resolution of 800x600:

What actually happens during such a Rodeo?? Now... there are different tasks to solve:

1)... a bull is released and a cowboy on a horse must catch this bull with a leaving and tie three legs together of the bull with a leather rope (... no fear, the whole spectacular takes few seconds, and the bull becomes released then again).

2)... a bull is released and two cowboys on horses must catch this bull with leaving. The first cowboy throws the leaving in such a way that it goes over the head of the bull while the second cowboy tries to get the hind legs with the leaving... while the bull still runs! That also takes only few seconds for these professionals .

3)... a cowboy must ride on a bull, which rises up by a belly belt, for as long as 8 seconds and deliver 'a good picture'. Correctly read... surviving on the bull does not only
count, but also how the cowboy survives. That does not seem to be easy for those professional bull riders. One of the cowboys was so heavily hurt during this bull ride that he had to be put on a stretcher and transported to a hospital! ... the bulls are by the way freed immediately from the belly belt after the short ride.

4)... see number 3.. in this case it concerns however a horse that has such a belly belt and fights strongly with the rider.
